podcasts and human performance technology

Again, something I knew nothing about - podcasting. Sure I know you can listen to sermons recorded and posted on websites but I guess I did not know what to call it nor did I know there was such a variety of subject matter out there to listen to. I actually subscribed to two different podcast on my rss but I had trouble finding the feed codes I needed to add it to my blog as a "gadget." How do I link my rss feeds to my blog so I do not have to go to two different places? Any way, I did get NPR Education linked to my blog so I will profile it. This podcast is on different topics in education such as "Thriving with ADHD" and they also had special podcasts highlighting the presidental candiates views on the different education topics. Podcasts would be a benefit to me but I do not think my students would sit still and listen to one of them - no visuals! Sometimes they can't even sit through an educational video.

As far as Human Performance Technology in education, this has been going on for a while particularly with the deaf and hard of hearing, the blind, and other special ed. students. There are many devices being used that "achieve, through people, increasingly successful accomplishments that are valued by all organizational stakeholders . . . ." With out some of this technology many students could not function in a regular classroom and many could not show improved performance in an EC classroom. However, everyday as I plan instruction I am considering, maybe unknowingly, I am planning improveed human performance by all the ways I try to differeniate my instruction - computers, videos, manipulatives, etc. I guess that is why Winston Salem State University calls their education department the School of Education and Human Performance. After all, at least in America, every day in every thing we do, we are looking to improve human performance.

Tammy - I really liked your podcast links. I,too, had trouble figuring out how to connect the podcast into my blog so you didnt have to go through more than one webpage to get it. Obviously, you had more patience than I did to figure it out as I did not actually get it to work. Any suggestions?

Also, I like how you point out that you are already involved with HPI when differentiating instruction. I didnt recognize or connect it that way when I was reading the assignment but I definitely see it now. It is interesting, also, as to the point you made about the school of education's title.

Makes me feel good to know I am already doing what is necessary for my students to always improve and to be successful. Sounds like you are a success, too!

I also enjoyed you podcast links. Like Michelle, I had trouble linking my podcast to blog, SO GOOD JOB. As for using podcast in the classroom, my students would not be able to listen to an educational podcast either, but they enjoy listening to each other. Therefore, I would use podcasting in a reading block. They could record themselves reading. If you have time try it with your students, they might like it.

As far as linking your podcast, you can do it in the same box/screen where you post your weekly reflections. I believe we were just supposed to link to the page where our podcast existed. So, you just need to copy the url or web address at the site where your podcast was, paste it into your 'new post' box and then select the text and click on the insert link button (chain link). A dialog box will pop up asking you to paste the url or web address into it. Once you post your blog, the link becomes active.

You are a trooper in sticking with it! Yeah! Also, podcasts are not all audio, it would make sense to most that we see and hear, so video podcasts are a great teaching tool :)

Michelle,

Sorry it took so long for me to respond. We have a lady from the state coming to observe Monday and of course admin wants all our t's crossed and i's dotted so I have worked all weekend.
Anyway, I used the add a gadget on my blog and it required the RSS feed and that is what I had a hard time finding. I found a nature podcast that has different things about science but I still have not found the RSS feed to put it in my blog. All I have to do is suscribe to in in my Google Reader to get it but it does not show the feed. Hope this is helpful. Even if late!

Tamara,

That is a great idea and I am sure the kids would love it. I did not try to do a podcast of my own so I am still not sure how that works but I will try it in the future.

Monique,

Leave it to me to do it the hard way!

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner, I have been up to my ears in sports with the three kids. I found a whole bunch of templates on the internet. I did a search for "blogger templates" there are tons of them. pick one, download it (they're usually free) [don't forget where you saved it]. Copy the code. Then on you dashboard, go to layout, then Edit HTML. Paste the code, check it, and save. Easier than it sounds.
